Rineke Dijkstra - Beach portraits

Rineke Dijkstra is a dutch photographer born in 1959 (almost my age but the difference is that she succeeded achieving something in her life). Her work is totally concentrated on human beings that she doesn't treat as models per se. It's maybe more her camera that is the model of the characters she reveals. In this now famous series, her first, shot between 1992 and 1994, she constrained herself to a similar scenography with young teen boys and girls standing in beach suits in front of the seaside. All the trouble comes from the colour-and-posture harmony, giving to these images a strange harshness (or may I say roughness, don't really know the difference), an expression of severity and difficulty to be young. Since then, she received several prizes and awards and did a lot more series but this one remains my favorite and has all this place on this dedicated-to-body blog. See more about her here.
