Max Waldman - Dionysus

Max Waldman (1919 - 1981) is mostly known for his dance pictures, but I'm not amateur (neither of dance nor pictures of dancers). What I find interesting in this superb series called Dionysus is the way he succeeds in creating a Goya equivalent in photography (this was one of his main influences). Often, this sort of mixed bodies are esthetically poor and not very flattering for human body, being neither sensual nor sexually attracting, but here, it's different. Actually it's more like a Gericault painting a Goya scene. There's all the strong sensuality of the French painter in these models. Yes, and the texture treatment of the image finishes to make this series a total masterpiece. A site about Max Waldman here
