Gyna Bootleg - Performances and studio photographs

After leaving Tinsel Teeth, Stephanie changed her name in Gyna Bootleg and became a lone performer (sometimes with a male or female partner) for rather sick and tense public sessions mixing various strident noises with (most of the times) simulacres of physical or psychic pain, often relative to tortured or stimulated sexual parts, but this is a rather narrow way to describe it (I would be more performing in French surely). Don't understand the meaning of most of it but it reminds me my impression when I first saw some an Ingmar Bergman films called Cries and Whispers, I was 15. Moved and challenged although not really knowing what was going on. She's not the first to do these sorts of things but I can't help to find she's brave and glorious, less arty or freaky than most of her predecessors, often males. And she's less on a sole sexual and feminist arm than the other provocative female performers than preceded here. She sometimes assures the vocals with the band Sire the way she did it with Tinsel Teeth, and maybe this is the way I liked her the best but I'm not a good judge. She had recently to switch from facebook to tumblr cos' of the too-much-for-facebook content of what she posted (not surprising). I added her tumblr (here) on the sites you should see category. Pictures above are derived from it and are my own choice. All are not from performances and are photo shots that fit finally more with the aim of this blog that the stage ones.

Freaks - Promo pictures

Freaks is one of the greatest movie in the history of cinema. It would be too long to explain why but we are many to think the same. And I felt in adoration with this movie as soon as I saw it for the first time, I must have been 12 or 13 years old. I think it deeply changed my way of looking on physical differences more than all the politically correct speeches that poured over my ears in the last 30 years. Although of course the movie raises questions about the status of these disabled actors and the way that are used for their "freaky nature", the result induces a strong empathy for them, maybe more now than at the time the movie was issued (and received in a rather aggressive manner, failing to be the commercial success it was supposed to be when the producer had the initial project and gave it to Todd Browning). Cos' the fact they become criminal avengers is more acceptable now that it was during the code Hays era. Each destiny of the above heros of this movie is interesting and I encourage everyone to go to wikipedia to read them.

Jacob Aue Sobol - Various works

Second post about this incredibly good Danish photographer (first one here). Although it does not propose the most flattering image of bodies, the strength is powerful and a sense of humanity  can be physically perceived through the vision of these pictures. Humanity but animality too. And above all, poetry.  But enough words, here his site and more about him.

Ivar Wigan - The Nomadic Suri Tribe

This Scottish photograph belongs more to the press photo genre than anything else, not what's this blog is really about but there's something so special in his work that it fits perfectly well with the current scoptophilian topic of this eSpace. It's like if his models, truly living their own thing (here war), were posing for him, making his series so homogenous and stunningly celebrating the animal strength and beauty of bodies, even here with this tribe who seems to telescope paradise lost and hell found. “I travel to make pictures of rare and special subjects that are sometimes neglected. These images are from December 2014 when I spent a month living with the nomadic Suri tribe on the border between Ethiopia and South Sudan.” Nothing more to add except his recent series on US gangs called The Gods is also of great interest. But the above one is more fascinating. His site here is under construction.
