Ann Liv Young - Performances

Ann Liv Young (actually she's 34), is an American performer who is in the tradition of corporal exhibition with the assumed aim to shock the audience (see her interviews), never hesitating to play with the limits of disgust that the public can tolerate (pee, shit, food, sex of course) and playing badly). I say tradition cos' this is a long history with 70's German stage activist as pioneers of this genre, but since Annie Sprinkles, this is now much more used by women for feminist purposes (or not) and on this blog I try to show the various approaches of this interesting way of putting taboo body parts (more and more with the increased bigotry from various religion revivals) and gestures in the center of the play, a seminal mission of prime importance. Above a selection of (for most of them) high quality images from various performances she did in the last 10 years. Of course I chose the pictures where obscenity is the most pregnant since this is the main topic of this blog. I encourage everyone to go to her site here or facebook page there and try to catch her if she comes near your place. And below some videos to see Ann Liv in action.

Ron Terner - Various

Too long I didn't post anything about this great photographer. More than 3 1/2 yrs ago (here). Not that I find his technics particularly novative (sometimes too much effects on the images) but I share his fascination for the truth of the skin, the details of the flesh, the incredible variety of body shapes (only females here, but we're still in a rather dominant masculine vision in photography), whatever the age and the beauty norms. So much humanity in these shots, and sensuality too. No discussion, it's a great piece of work. In this post I chose to stay rather homogenous in the styles (colour specially) and omitted some other great shots he did, but you can see more on his blog here. I collected this selection on it, and more specifically images posted in the last 3 years.

Ronald Puhle - Various works

Ronald Puhle is German, lives in Berlin and is born in 1963. He covers a lot of styles and is not, as most of "artists", stuck to one an only. So, it's normal that I had  to make his choice among the large amount of images he produces and finds one of these styles more in agreement with my own tastes. Here's a selection of his pictures I like. But I encourage everyone to click here or there to explore more of his visual universe. Maybe your choice will be different. I love the humanity flavor of the ones above.

Brittany Markert

I got not much to add to my previous post (2 years ago) about this American photographer (here). Most of the present selection seems to consist of new material and she maintains her high level of quality. The Francesca Woodman influence is still there but it's less haunted by death and more nourrished by life and pleasures of the body. On the photographic level, some images stay imprinted in our memory a long time, the reason I feel the need to add some black and white picture to the previous post. You can see her flickr site here. There's full of more. I think she's the model on the last 4 pictures.
