Henri Maccheroni - 2000 pictures of the sex of a woman

This French engraver and photographer born in 1932 and recently deceased (in 2016 in a complete mediatic discretion), decided to take pictures of a the same woman's sex during several years (from 1969 to 1971 and then from 1972 to 1974, once or twice a week). The images above are a small selection of this series, not of my favorites but of what I found on the web but there are 1988 other ones. It's true that if we are, as men, really honest, we must admit that there is nothing more interesting, fascinating and exciting to look at, than the sex of the woman we love. Some may say that we don't even have to love her to feel this way toward her vulva (not the vagina as it is too often called) and I don't know whether Henri Maccheroni was in love with this woman. But there's still more fascination when love is involved, at least in my views. It's strange that this great series didn't feature previously on Scoptophilia but you know I'm not an exegete of photography so I have several gaps in my culture. This was one of them. No site in English to provide.

Manuel Laval - Surreal Body Art

Born in Germany in 1952, Manuel Laval has a very idiosyncrasic use of photography. It's crude, kitsch, with full of electric colors, explicit sex, and enigmatic figures. Sometimes it seems really amateurish but it is so assumed that it is in no way a weakness. Not totally the style I cherish the most but impossible not to include it in Scoptophilia since there is so much to look at. There's a true fascination for sexual parts as photographic subjects and it's one of the strength of his work. And also a form of irony and sarcastic provocation that complete the picture of this singular artist. You can see much more (and maybe find images you'll prefer to my own selection) on his site here and his blog there

Talia Chetrit - Various works

Talia Chetrit is a New York photographer belonging to the fashion world and not really fitting with the themas of this blog. She has a lot of prestigious clients, enough for me not to be interested since I despise this style. But on her blog, she posts excellent pictures, often self-portraits, of everyday life situations, with a nice treatment of the image, that provides a true naturalistic sensuality. Maybe a way to wahs her head of all this fainted sophistication in this fake universe of fashion. Thus, I really like this series. Her site here for other works in the line of this post, and another one here if you want to explore her other more money-earning style. Note that she's having exhibition with the work I post tonight.

JW Purdy - My nude year

Initially, I was thinking this was a self-portrait project. It looked like. A picture by day, nude, it sounded as some other projects of women using their body and their nudity to question intimacy, beauty normalization, the raise of sensuality in unperfect bodies and so many others problems that women have to face with this unvoluntary (and often unwanted) role of male sexual fantasies' support. But actually, JW Purdy is a male photographer. Thus, I thought he used a model and I was quite disappointed. But the name of the model being Shannon Purdy, it could be his wife. And on his site, it is actually specified that she's his muse/wife (here). Can't say that the project fulfils all expectation, many pictures are rather weak, and he has often a very mainstream erotic approach, but here and there, there are some strong images, the ones I selected above. Of course, you may not share my views and therefore you can go and see the portfolio there. There is even a book that you can buy if you like it enough to get it. And fine to see colour again on Scoptophilia isn't it?
